Tools and providers
Part of Finance creator tools and suppliers: choosing by content risk
Employee, freelancer, agency or software for finance content, compared on one output
Compare England finance-creator supplier routes on scope, authority, data access, evidence, continuity and exit before choosing a provider fairly.
Employee, freelancer, agency or software for finance content are not interchangeable. A useful comparison asks which delivery route fits one defined task. Start with scope, authority, data access and evidence. Then compare continuity and exit. A named supplier from each route makes the comparison concrete.
This category review was completed on 5 September 2026. The earlier version named no provider: the right supplier depends on the commission, and no quote, account, purchase, work sample or outcome was tested. The named examples below are public references, not tested suppliers.
The criteria apply to an England-based creator business; the cited FCA and ICO material has UK reach. Contracts may need advice under the law of England and Wales.
What to take away
- Employment status depends on how the relationship operates, not on the supplier label used.
- Software such as Grammarly Business, Jasper or Surfer SEO can capture sources and route workflow but does not supply professional judgement on its own.
- Verify any claim to approve a financial promotion against the FCA permission for that exact work.
For the test commission described below, measure six points:
- Who performs the work and under which legal entity?
- What relevant authority or qualification can be verified?
- Which systems and personal information will they access?
- What evidence will accompany the result?
- Who covers absence, incidents and urgent corrections?
- What is returned, retained or deleted at exit?
Do not score price until scope, deliverable and responsibility match.
Named England examples
- Employee
- Which? Money, MoneyWeek
- Freelancer
- Upwork, Fiverr, PeoplePerHour, Contently
- Agency
- Cognito, Lansons, Teamspirit, Edelman
- Software
- Grammarly Business, Jasper, Surfer SEO, Acrolinx
Scope and authority to verify
- Employee
- Employment contract, training, any FCA permission for the exact task
- Freelancer
- Contracting identity, NCTJ, CFA UK or CISI qualification, insurance
- Agency
- Named team roles, subcontractor chain, FCA permission for approval work
- Software
- Configuration and human review; the vendor may hold no FCA permission
Data access, evidence and exit
- Employee
- Payroll and HR records; work product sits with employer; exit via notice and handover
- Freelancer
- Named person gets access; marked draft and decision record; deletion terms in contract
- Agency
- Agency security terms, subprocessor list, audit trail; exit plan and data return
- Software
- Encryption, authentication, audit logging; test export and deletion before live data
Continuity
- Employee
- Publisher covers absence, holiday and sick pay
- Freelancer
- No cover unless the freelancer names a substitute
- Agency
- Agency supplies cover but the actual worker may change
- Software
- Vendor uptime and support terms; no editorial judgement
Worked example: the five-minute video test commission
What happens for this commission
- Employee
- Salaried writer checks sources and risk wording, returns marked draft and decision record.
- Freelancer
- Named specialist checks sources and risk wording, returns marked draft and decision record.
- Agency
- Named team checks sources, returns draft and decision record.
- Software
- Flags phrases and stores sources; a human reviewer still checks sources and risk wording.
Typical total for this commission
- Employee
- Salary and on-costs determine cost; no separate invoice.
- Freelancer
- £80 to £1,200 at £20 to £150 per hour for 4 to 8 hours.
- Agency
- £500 to £1,500 for a day, often billed as a minimum day.
- Software
- About $15 to $99 per month plus reviewer time.
For a one-off fact-check, a freelancer is usually the best fit. For ongoing weekly output, an employee or agency retainer fits. For regulated approval, use a route with FCA permission for the exact task and verify the permission.
The test commission
Use the same test commission for every route: verify the sources and risk wording for a five-minute video about an FCA-regulated product, then return a marked draft and decision record by an agreed time. State whether the supplier must give legal advice, regulatory approval, factual checking or workflow support. Those are different services.

In-house employee or worker
Publishers such as Which? Money and MoneyWeek keep salaried writers and editors on staff. This route offers close access to editorial context and direct control over daily systems.
It also puts recruitment, supervision, training, absence cover and quality assurance on the publisher. A job title does not establish regulatory or legal competence, so specialist review may still be external.
LinkedIn and Indeed carry finance writer vacancies, but a job advert does not prove FCA permission.
Employment status is fact-sensitive. Acas says its Great Britain employment-status guidance considers both the agreement and how the relationship operates. Do not use supplier labels to avoid a status assessment.
Individual independent specialist
Upwork, Fiverr, PeoplePerHour and Contently list finance writers; typical rates run from about £20 to £150 per hour, depending on specialism and deadline.
An individual may suit a bounded research, fact-check or advisory task where the named person's expertise matters. Ask who delivers the work, how conflicts are handled and what happens during illness or overload. The publisher may need another route for continuity.
Relevant qualifications include NCTJ journalism training, CFA UK investment management certificates and CISI financial planning certificates.
Verify the contracting identity rather than relying on a profile name. The Companies House company-information service can show records for incorporated suppliers, although sole traders will not necessarily appear. Register presence does not prove competence, solvency or approval.
Agency or managed service
Cognito, Lansons and Teamspirit are financial services agencies in England. Edelman and Ogilvy run wider corporate and brand practices.
Agency day rates for finance content specialists typically run from £500 to £1,500 per person per day in England as of 2026. Project fees often start at £5,000 for a defined campaign.
An agency can coordinate several people and provide cover, but the actual worker and subcontracting chain may be less visible. Require named roles, escalation times, conflict checks, change control and permission before a subcontractor accesses files. Compare the proposed team, not the agency's broad capability deck.
Where audience information is processed on the publisher's instructions, the ICO's contract guidance covers written terms, security, subprocessors, rights support and end-of-contract handling. Check the ICO page for updates after the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 and obtain current privacy advice.
Self-service software
Grammarly Business lists plans from about $15 per member per month billed annually. Jasper lists creator plans from about $49 per month. Surfer SEO starts at about $99 per month. Acrolinx and Writer quote enterprise pricing.
Software may help with repeatable source capture, workflow routing or records. It does not supply professional judgement merely because it flags a phrase. The buyer must configure access, validate output and arrange human review.
For a cloud product, the NCSC's lightweight SaaS approach asks for evidence about encryption, authentication, audit logging and incidents. Test export and deletion before placing live data in the service.
Compare regulatory claims separately
If any route claims it can approve another person's financial promotion, verify that exact claim. The FCA says approval requires the appropriate permission unless an exemption applies. Search the full regulatory record and match the permission to the work. FCA status is not a quality award.
Check the FCA register for the named legal entity, whether that is an agency, a sole trader or a software vendor.
Choose the narrowest route that can deliver the specified output with inspectable evidence. Record assumptions and unresolved points. A mixed model is often possible, but each hand-off must have a named owner rather than being hidden inside the word supplier.

Common questions
What does the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 change for supplier contracts?
The Act updates UK data protection law. It does not remove the need for written terms covering security, subprocessors, rights support and end-of-contract handling. Check the ICO's current contract guidance.
Does the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 change FCA approval of financial promotions?
No. FCA approval still requires the appropriate permission unless an exemption applies. The Act is about data protection, not financial promotion rules.
