Partnering with personal-finance creators: a UK brand's evidence pack
How UK brands can brief, vet and contract a personal-finance creator partnership, with FCA disclosure checks, audience evidence and exit terms.
What to take away
- A personal-finance creator partnership runs on five documents: brief, audience evidence, regulatory check, contract and exit schedule.
- FCA Finalised Guidance FG24/1 places duties on the firm as well as the creator, so sign-off trails must be written down.
- Audience proof means platform analytics and a paid sample, not follower totals.
- Exit terms should set takedown windows, whitelisting end dates and archive rules before the first post goes live.
Build the brief before you discuss fees
Write one page that fixes the objective, the audience segment, the key messages and the risk warning that must appear in every post. Add the deliverable list, the approval turnaround and the measurement window. Creators price against scope, so a vague brief invites a vague quote.
Name a single approver on your side and the date by which draft captions must arrive. Say who pays for boosted posts and which results count as success. A brief that names no owner will stall in legal review.
The five documents in the pack
- Briefobjective, audience, messages, mandatory wording and dates.
- Audience evidence sheet: ninety days of platform analytics plus a paid sample.
- Regulatory checkwhether the post is a financial promotion and who approves it.
- Contractdeliverables, fee, usage rights, exclusivity and payment terms in pounds.
- Exit scheduletakedown window, whitelisting end date and archive rules.
Audience evidence that survives scrutiny
Follower counts say little about who is watching. Ask for platform demographic reports covering the last ninety days, then compare the top five locations with your target market.
| Evidence item | What to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Audience location | Top five countries and cities, ninety days | Confirms the audience sits in the UK |
| Age bands | Platform demographic report | Matches the segment you are buying |
| Saved and shared rate | Post-level analytics for three posts | Shows planning content rather than reach |
For a debt or savings campaign, ask for the creator's commentary plan. A single chart with no explanation rarely shifts a considered purchase. Add one question: what did their audience ask most often last quarter?
Example: a vetting checklist for a debt-focused creator
- Confirm the creator holds the permissions needed if regulated products are discussed.
- Read the last six posts and check each for a risk warning and an ad label.
- Request saved, shared and comment rates for three comparable posts.
- Confirm who owns the footage and how long it stays on the creator's channel.
Disclosure duties that sit with both sides
The FCA expects firms and creators to approve and record financial promotions made on social media, as set out in its finalised guidance FG24/1.
The ASA's advice on affiliate marketing makes the disclosure rule plain: a commercial relationship must be clear before a reader engages with the content.
Restrictions on financial promotions come from statute, chiefly the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, so an unapproved invitation to invest can expose both sides.
Keep a dated approval record for each paid post. The firm usually carries the regulatory risk when a promotion goes out without approval.
Exit terms worth negotiating
Set a takedown window of fourteen days from written notice, and separate it from compliance removals. A post pulled for regulatory reasons should not trigger a penalty.
Limit whitelisting and paid amplification rights to six months unless both sides agree a renewal fee. State who owns raw footage and unused cuts.
Payment in pounds, thirty days from invoice, is common. Add an indemnity clause covering claims about your own product.
Where UK deal flow is moving
More brands are buying campaigns with female finance influencers winning deals, and the reasons sit in audience data, regulator expectations and contract structures. Read that analysis before you set your next budget line.
Plan the skills you will need soon
Commissioning a partnership now means planning for the skills creators will hold in 2027. Check which finance creator skills for 2027 will matter before you agree a retainer, and note that prompt fluency is not on the list.
Common questions
Does every creator post need FCA approval?
Not every one, but a post that promotes a regulated product and counts as a financial promotion must be approved by an authorised person first. The approving firm should keep a dated record.
How long should a partnership run?
Start with a three-month test, measured against cost per engaged session or funded account, then renew on evidence. Six to twelve months suits creators who publish regular planning content.
What audience evidence is reasonable to ask for?
Platform demographics for ninety days, post-level analytics for three comparable posts, and a paid reach sample. Creators who refuse all three are usually protecting weak data.
Can a creator delete a post once the campaign ends?
Only if the contract allows it. A twelve-month archive period is common, with compliance removals exempt from any penalty.
